Line of the Night: 2.3.14

Al Jefferson was 2 points and 1 rebound shy of a 40/20 game.

Al Jefferson got to go head-to-head with one of the power forwards that was selected ahead of him for the All-Star game and showed the coaches why they got it wrong.  Jefferson outscored Chris Bosh 38-15 and outrebounded Bosh 19-7.  The real story of the game, though, was LeBron James going off for a career-high and franchise record 61 points (one less than Carmelo’s career-high), which trumped whatever Jefferson had going on and led the Heat to a win over the Bobcats.  In other games, the Nets picked up 19 steals against the Bulls to help secure a win. Deron Williams let the Nets in points and assists.  Kevin Love had an MVP performance himself, scoring 33 points and bringing down 19 rebounds as the Timberwolves managed a win over the Nuggets, despite the return of Ty Lawson who led the Nuggets in points, steals and assists.  Tyson Chandler hauled in an impressive 18 rebounds, but it was not good enough for a game-high as Andre Drummond, who may officially be the best rebound in the league, brought down a career-high 26 rebounds to help the Detroit Pistons put down the Knicks who continue to struggle. Enes Kanter came off the bench to score 27 points and grab 14 rebounds, but the Bucks still manage to (perhaps by accident) beat the Utah Jazz behind a 31-point performances from Ersan Ilyasova.  Ilyasova may end up being suspended for conduct detrimental to the team’s tanking plan, though he did apologize for going 13/14 from the field.  The Lakers got a solid all-around game from Pau Gasol to help them beat the Portland Trailbalzers by the narrowest of margins: 107-106.  Niclas Batum and Robin Lopez both had strong rebounding outings for the Trailblazers.  Tyreke Evans was 2 assists shy of a triple-double, but it was not enough for the Pelicans to overcome the Kings.  And finally, Marc Gasol had a nice all-around game that featured 3 steals and 3 blocks, and Zach Randolph was good for a double-double as the Memphis Grizzlies topped the Washington Wizards.

Andre Drummond grabbed a career-high 26 rebounds in a win against the Knicks.

My pick for Line of the night goes to LeBron James for obvious reason.  An evening high.  A career high.  A franchise record.  Those don’t happen every night.  Looking at the stats though, James’s game is not head-and-shoulders above all other players.  AL Jefferson posted MVP numbers himself and on most any other night, the numbers Jefferson posted would have easily secured Line of the Night.  In my eyes, a 40/20 game is far more impressive than a 60/5/5, but Jefferson didn’t quite reach that plateau.  Likewise, Andre Drummond’s 26-rebounds was amazing.  Whatever criticism Drummond may receive, it is clear that this guy is the best rebound in the league right now.  Honourable mention goes out to Marc Gasol, who had a nice all-around game, and Ty Lawsom who came up huge for the Nuggets in his first game back from injury, despite the fact that the Nuggets ultimately lost the game.
