The best in the west went head-to-head to ring in the new year as the Portland Trailblazers visited the Oklahoma City Thunder, and MVP candidates Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge took it as an opportunity to make a statement.  Durant posted ANOTHER 30/10 game, posting a game-high 37 points, and grabbing, also a game-high 14 rebounds.  Without Westbrook, though, the Thunder could not weather 20/10 games from both Aldridge and Damian Lillard and the Trailblazers put themselves in a position to get up on the Thunder.  Joakim Noah grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds, but the Raptors used a balanced attack to beat the Bulls.  Mason Plumlee had a solid night DeMarcus Cousins showed up prepared to battle it out with Dwight Howard and came out on top of that match up, out-rebounding Dwight 16-8 and out-scoring him 17-15.  Despite posting a game-high 38

points, James Harden was not able to lead the Rockets past the Kings. Mark Jackson took a game out of Popovich’s playbook and brought his bench out early to put down the Orlando Magic.  Roy Hibbert blocked 5 shots as the Pacers made short work of the Cavaliers. Paul Millsap was looking like an MVP, scoring 34 points and hauling in 15 rebounds, leading the Hawks past the Celtics by the narrowest of margins: 92-91.  The stat lines for Boston’s starters looked like something from the pre-shot-clock era as not a single starter on the Celtics posted double-digits.  And finally, the Bucks went into the Staples Center and defeated the Lakers.  Brandon Knight posted a game-high 37 points in the win.

Durant had an amazing night, and Harden led all scorers, but I have to go with Millsap on this one.  His FG% was higher than the other 30+ point scorers, the only guy who got more rebounds (Cousins +1) scored 17 fewer points, and Millsaps defensive stats (2 steals and 2 blocks) were pretty solid.  Can’t go wrong with a 30/15 night on high FG% to go along with nice defensive stats.
