Line of the Night: 1.15.14

The Orlando Magic were hoping to end their 8-game losing streak (the longest current losing streak in the NBA) and likely figured a home game against a depleted Bulls roster (no Luol Deg and no Derrick Rose) would be the perfect opportunity to do that.  That game went into triple overtime, so the Magic certainly put themselves in a position to win, but ultimately were unable to pull off the win, and so their losing streak was extended to 9 games.  Joakim Noah was one rebound shy of a 20/20 game, while Jameer Nelson posted a 30/10 game and rookie sensation Victor Oladipo posted a season-high for rookies with 35 points!  Kevin Love posted a solid 20/10 game, but it was not enough to lift the T-wolves over the surging Kings who have been playing well as of late.  Eric Gordon exploded for 35 points on only 17 shots as the Pelican faced the Rockets, but it was not enough as the Rockets came out on top.  The Grizzlies extended their winning streak to four games at the expense of the Bucks and are finally at .500.  The Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers seemed to be trading buckets for 48 minutes with the Clippers coming out on top by a margin of two points.   J.J. Redick came away with a game-high 33 points.  The Denver Nuggets manages an impressive win over the Golden State Warriors behind a dominating 24-rebound performances from J.J. Hickson.  Hickson wasn’t the only player to grab 20 or more rebounds last night as Jared Sullinger posted a 25/20 game, helping to Celtics to end their losing streak by ending the Raptor’s winning streak.  Al Jefferson and Kemba Walker both chipped in 20+ point games to help lead the Bobcats past the 76ers.  The Suns managed a win over the Lakers, handing them their 6th straight loss.  LaMarcus Aldridge had another MVP night as he lead the Trailblazers past the Cavaliers and almost posted a 30/20 game.  Rookie point guard Trey Burke got a little lesson from Tony Parker as the Spurs topped the Jazz.  And Greg Oden proved a bad-luck charm for the Heat who dropped a game to the Wizards in his first game in several years.

Jared Sullinger helped snap Boston's losing streak.

My pick for Line of the Night is a tossup between LaMarcus Aldridge, Jared Sullinger and Joakim Noah.  Sullinger’s FG% was more impressive and he grabbed a couple more boards and one more steal, but LMA posted 7 more points.  I don’t normally weigh FG% so much when the percentages aren’t too far off, but at the end of the night LMA took 12 more shots than Sullinger and only came away with 7 more points. Noah though matched Sullinger for steals, and topped both players with 2 blocks while also topping them with 6 assists.  And his FG% was the highest among the three players.  He does have the advantage with minutes, having played slightly over 48 minutes in a triple overtime win, but I think I’ll still have to go with Noah here.  Anybody who picks Sullinger or LMA have a legit argument though.  And honourable mention to J.J. Hickson’s amazing evening-high 24 rebounds!
