Official signings came in a flurry over the past couple of days, but most were expected as players and teams had already publically agreed to terms. There were some surprises however. Andrew Bynum, who was refusing to work out with teams, finally made his decision and has opted to sign a two year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The contract, worth up to 24 million dollars, is only partially guaranteed in the second year which is a team option. Bynum, though perhaps the biggest risk among all free agents, also yields perhaps the highest potential of all free agents this season not named Dwight Howard or Chris Paul. His knee injuries are the obvious concern, but if his health is not an issue, Bynum has yet to reach his full potential and could be a huge offensive weapon, as well as a premiere rebounder. It seems that after enduring several season with injury-plagued rebounding-machine Anderson Varejao, the Cavaliers have come to enjoy paying promising centers millions of dollars to sit on the bench whilst nursing knee injuries.

Chauncey Billups hopes to help Detroit return to their glory days.

In other news, the Detroit Pistons re-sign Chauncey Billups who will be returning to the team where he won a championship. Joe Dumars had traded Billups several seasons ago, but welcomes back the former Finals MVP/All-Star and likely hopes that Billups’ veteran leadership can help to take this team back into the playoffs and contention, especially when coupled with the signing of Josh Smith and the promise of potential growth from young players like: Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, Brandon Knight and Kyle Singler. The Pistons also signed European shooting guard Luigi Datome who shot 50% from the floor, nearly 40% from beyond the arc and over 90% from the charity stripe in Europe last year. The Pistons are hoping that kind of efficiency translates into his NBA game. The Pistons also drafted shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. If these two guards can reach their full potential, the Pistons may very well have the biggest turnaround in the league next season. A lot will hinge on how well the players in the point guard rotation will serve as efficient play makers.

The Milwaukee Bucks, who seem resigned to let both Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings walk, are attempting to pilfere the Atlanta Hawks’ roster, picking up talented guard Jeff Teague. Teague has proven to be an efficient play maker (better than a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio) and consistent three-point shooter. I’m not sure this makes the Bucks better since it appears as though the Bucks are losing a couple of pieces, but it does install a pass-first point guard into their system, which may help to make the team more efficient as it moves forward in building a playoff team. The Hawks have several days to match the deal.  Though the Bucks made the playoffs last season, it seems that with improvements made by teams like Detroit and Cleveland, the Bucks may struggle to earn a playoff spot next season.
